PW's Samuels reported for suspect action

Pune, Apr 15: Pune Warriors' West Indian off-spinner Marlon Samuels has been reported for a suspect action by the umpires after Pune's match against Chennai Super Kings, here on Saturday night.

A media release issued by IPL said that on-field umpires Aleem Dar of Pakistan and Australia's Bruce Oxenford along with third umpire Vineet Kulkarni reported about Samuels' action.

"Marlon Samuels has been reported for bowling certain deliveries with a suspected illegal action during IPL match against Chennai Super Kings, played in Pune on 14 April 2012. The bowler was reported by on-field umpires Aleem Dar and Bruce Oxenford, along with third umpire Vineet Kulkarni, at the conclusion of the match," the release stated.

This is not the first time Samuels has been under the scanner. During a Test match against South Africa in Durban in 2008, umpires Simon Taufel of Australia and Dar, who also officiated in that game, had reported his action for the same 'fast ball' as it has been reported now. However, last year, ICC cleared his action.

"A comprehensive analysis revealed that his mean elbow extension was now comfortably within the 15-degree level of tolerance permitted under the relevant regulations," the ICC had said in a statement last year.

"During the original Test on 11 February 2008, his mean elbow extension had been calculated to be in excess of 15 degrees," it had added then.

The concern with Samuels action is when he bowls his fast offbreaks. During the game against Chennai he clocked above 120 kmph, speed usually associated with medium fast bowlers.

In spite of his action being called into suspicion, Samuels can continue bowling in IPL 5. But if reported once again, he will be banned from bowling.

"Under the IPL Suspected Illegal Bowling Action policy, Mr Samuels may continue to be selected to play and bowl for Pune Warriors India but should he be reported a second time, he will be suspended from bowling for the remainder of the season," the release further stated.

Samuels was signed by Pune Warriors this season. His is playing in his first IPL tournament.
