Pune, Apr 27: It was good to see India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh wielding his willow at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium on Thursday. Though, it was for a brief period as he visited his Pune Warriors team-mates playing in IPL 5.
For almost four months now, Yuvraj has not touched a cricket bat. On many occasions, he might have been tempted to pick a bat and go out to smash sixes as he has done in the past. But his illness did not allow him to return to the field.
Yuvraj, who had been diagnosed with a rare germ-cell cancer, was in the US for chemotherapy treatment and now has returned to India.
This was the first time that he made an appearance on a cricket field. Wearing his usual number 12 jersey, this time in Pune Warriors colours, Yuvraj was in good spirits. Fans, who love him all over the country, welcomed the World Cup hero with huge roars. A packed Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium cheered their hero and Yuvraj acknowledged those cheers.
Yuvraj was seen in a jovial mood as he caught up with his team-mates. Sourav Ganguly, Robin Uthappa, Murali Kartik, Ashish Nehra, Rahul Sharma among were the Pune player who were spotted interacting with the left-hander. Of course, he did meet other cricketers at the ground.
Once the initial greetings were exchanged, Pune players got into a huddle with Yuvraj make a brief speech. He would have definitely spoken some words which would inspire his friends.
After the talk with his team-mates, he joined then and knocked a few balls on the practice pitches.
“I wanted to go and take guard today but I was happy to hit a few balls and see my team-mates. I am happy to see my friends and of course the crowd. It's nice to be back among my team-mates and friends. It's special today,” Yuvraj said.
Pune captain Ganguly said: “It's good to see him, he's in the dug out.”
It would have been great if Pune could have gifted Yuvraj a win on Thursday. But they went down by 18 runs to Deccan Chargers.
For a moment, Yuvraj would have thought what if he was in the middle. He could have got those 18 runs and made his team win. Those days might not be far away as he attempts to get back to training in a couple of months.
