Pune, May 1: Sachin Tendulkar, speaking for the first time after his nomination to the Rajya Sabha, has said he could not refuse the honour by the President of India and added he is a sportsperson and not a politician.
Speaking at a function here where he was honoured for scoring 100 international centuries, Tendulkar spoke on various issues including his journey as a cricketer and wanted the fans to support him as a Member of Parliament.
When he was asked to comment on Rajya Sabha nomination, he smiled and answered: “This is a bouncer.”
“I could not refuse the honour given by President. I am not a politician but a sportsperson. I will not quit cricket, I will keep playing cricket. Cricket is my life,” said Tendulkar on Tuesday.
The Master Blaster said he was nominated to the House of Elders for his contribution to cricket. He said he will not give up cricket for politics. He said he will make useful contribution as an MP.
“There have been big names nominated before (for Rajya Sabha). There is Lata (Mangeshkar) Didi. I have heard Prithviraj Kapoor was also nominated. These nominations are because of the contributions in their field. It is a reflection of their achievements in their fields. Like, I have played cricket for 22 and half years for India. I am nominated for playing cricket for 22 and half years.”
“It is an honour. I am not a politician and sportsperson. I will always remain a sportsperson. There are lot of responsibilities with this nomination. Whatever awards I have got are due to my contribution to cricket. I don't think I will quit cricket and enter politics. Cricket is my life,” Tendulkar said.
“I remember, two years back, Indian Air Force made me a Group Captain. I don't even know how to fly a plane."
“It is a big honour. From my side, for sports I can contribute, that is my expertise. I will do something for sports. I hope you will support me in this. Your support is important.”
“Again, I would like to say, I am a sportsman and will always be a sportsman.”
“World Cup wins was the biggest moment in my life,” Tendulkar said while talking about his memorable moments in cricket.
