Australia paceman Johnson was ruled out of IPL 5 as he has not still recovered from a surgery on his toe. He was bought by Mumbai in this year's auction for $300,000.
“Mumbai Indians have signed West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Smith as replacement for Mitchell Johnson. The Australian fast bowler was ruled out to play IPL by Cricket Australia due to injury. Dwayne Smith is expected to join Mumbai Indians team on Thursday, 3rd May 2012,” a team spokesperson was quoted as saying on the Mumbai Indians website on Wednesday.
Smith has previously played for Mumbai in the inaugural edition of IPL in 2008. He had replaced Dwayne Bravo then and featured in four games.
The 29-year-old was bought by Deccan Chargers in 2009 and was part of the Hyderabad-based team.
The player from Barbados is a good addition for Mumbai with his all-round abilities.
Smith, recently played for Khulna Royal Bengals in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). He has played 10 Tests and 77 ODIs for the West Indies.
