Sangakkara-led Chargers are virtually out of the tournament with only two wins from 11 matches as they are rooted to the bottom of the table with five points. Facing seventh placed Kings XI Punjab, Chargers need something extraordinary to pull a win at Hyderabad.
The team has been highly inconsistent in the tournament as batsmen do not complement the bowlers and vice-versa. On Sunday, Chargers' put up a good score against Royal Challengers Bangalore but bowlers let the team down as AB de Villiers scored a brilliant 17-ball 47 to guide his team through.
Though the team's batting has considerably improved over the last few matches, bowling wholly depends on Dale Steyn. Domestic pacers Anand Rajan, Veer Pratap Singh, Ashish Reddy have failed to provide support to the South African speedster.
On the other hand, Kings XI Punjab, seem to have been highly influenced by the inclusion of all-rounder Azhar Mahmood, as he has been impressive throughout. Punjab relies on Mahmood to get the breakthroughs as he has been one person to rely on since his inclusion.
With back to back wins over Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore, David Hussey-led team lost to Rajasthan Royals by 43 runs in their previous game. Though the team has lost six matches so far, with 10 points off 11 games, Hussey's XI still stands a chance to make it to the final four.
Hussey, Shaun Marsh and Mandeep Singh have been the top run scorers for Punjab and have been quite consistent. Bowling attack also looks decent, as Praveen Kumar and the find of the season Parvinder Awana have been doing a good job, while Ryan Harris' inclusion has further bolstered their bowling department.
Moreover, the leg-spinner Piyush Chawla has been very effective and ranked third in the list of highest wicket-takers in IPL 5, the leg spinner has claimed 14 wickets so far.
With Kings XI getting more encouragement from their mentor, guide Adam Gilchrist, who has been on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury, will look to enhance their momentum to fancy their chances in qualifying for the play-offs.
