Hyderabad, May 9: After a thumping win over Deccan Chargers, Kings XI Punjab stand-in skipper David Hussey said his team is confident despite facing a uphill task of winning all its remaining matches to secure a place in the play-offs.
Kings XI Punjab are level on points (12) with fourth placed Rajasthan Royals, but sit a place below on fifth in the points table.
"Of course, we are confident. (We) would not be in the competition if we are not confident of making it to the finals. Every team starts they will make it to the top four. Our job is to win the next four to qualify for the finals." Hussey told reporters during the post match press conference.
"If Mandeep (Singh) keeps playing well and (Parvinder) Awana keeps playing well and others, we will have the chance," he added.
Mandeep scored his IPL career best of 75 runs to push Punjab to a competitive total of 170/5.
"Wicket is on the lower side. So, we knew if we scored around 160-170 it will be a good score which ultimately we did," he said.
Deccan Chargers skipper Kumar Sangakkara felt they gave away too many runs at the start, "I thought the difference today was the bowling in the first four overs, we bowled too short on a wicket that still had something in it for the bowlers. Kings XI showed us how to bowl and where to bowl. Mandeep and Dave batted really well."
Man-of-the-match Mandeep Singh was happy to score for his team and praised skipper Hussey for keeping faith in him, "Hussey has supported us a lot, he has shown a lot of faith in me. I'm really satisfied today, as from the beginning of the tournament I wanted to stay till the 15th over, and I got the runs for the team."
Kings XI will once again face the Chargers in a return-leg tie on Sunday. Hussey and Co will also face Delhi Daredevils in a home and away game along with a match against defending champions Chennai Super Kings.
