Mohali, May 13: Stand-in skipper David Hussey along with Gurkeerat Singh helped Kings XI Punjab clinch a last-ball thrilling victory over Deccan Chargers in game 61 of IPL 5 played at the PCA stadium in Mohali.
Early blows left Punjab hanging at 56/3, but skipper Hussey and Co added steady partnerships in between which helped them hang on right till the end. Chargers gave away 82 runs in the last six overs. With 16 needed to win in the last over, Punjab's Gurkeerat Singh sealed it smashing 20 runs off Manpreet Gony.
Deccan pacer Dan Christian gave two early breakthroughs dismissing Nitin Saini (3) and in-form Shaun Marsh (11).
Skipper Hussey held their innings together after the top-order failed to provide a good start. The Australian batsman smashed four boundaries and five sixes in innings of 65 off just 35 balls.
Hussey's unbeaten knock helped his side gain momentum with the support of all-rounder Azhar Mahmood (31), both added 44 runs to reach the 100-run mark. Another quick 41 runs between Hussey and Siddarth Chitnis moved them closer to the target.
In the end, Gurkeerat, who scored a quick 12-ball 29 smashing four boundaries and a six, finished it off smashing 16 runs in the final over.
Punjab's dramatic victory still keeps them on seventh place but they need to win their remaining games to make it to the top-four. Deccan still can't find a way to win, losing 11 in 14 games.
