Gambhir changed KKR's fortunes: Akram

Pune, May 23: Kolkata Knight Riders bowling coach Wasim Akram has said skipper Gautam Gambhir's leadership has made the difference to the team's fortunes as they reached their first IPL final this season.

After finishing sixth (2008), eighth (2009), sixth (2010) and fourth (2011) in the last four editions of Indian Premier League, KKR has reached the final of IPL for the first time since its inception, as fans, supporting staff and the players are all excited about the team's dream run in IPL 5

"I am happy to be associated with KKR. It's a great bunch of boys, love to stick around with each other. Long story what's changed from the first four years, but to cut it short, its all because of a very good captain and an enthusiastic owner," the Pakistani bowling legend said.

Wasim Akram, pleased with team's performance was visibly very happy as they defeated table toppers Delhi Daredevils to reach the final of the fifth edition of Indian Premier League, credited the change in fortune to Gautam Gambhir's leadership skills, which actually changed things around in 2012 after four years of inconsistent run in IPL.

"We read the wicket well, we played four spinners, they played only one, had they got in another spinner or two, it could have gotten lot closer," he said.

Defending 162/4, Kolkata Knight Riders bowled extremely well to contain Delhi Daredevils as they fell short by 18 runs to ensure that Gautam Gambhir's XI entered their maiden IPL final on Tuesday.

Akram, had earlier commented on the controversies that has shown IPL in bad light, saying that " it is great advertisement for pure entertainment. Only successful people have critics. In our culture, there is a tendency to run down a prosperous venture. Make no mistake, IPL is all about success. Every year it is making a positive statement and attracting the best in the world. We have had packed stadiums in almost every game. That's just great."

He also urged people top ignore critics and focus only on the game as the phase is more exciting with all the metropolitan cities battling it out for IPL 5 trophy.
