Colombo, Jun 18: Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi feels the delay in announcing the Twenty20 squad for the World Cup scheduled to be played in September would affect the team's chances at the prestigious event.
Having qualified for the inaugural World Cup final and winning the title in 2009, Pakistan have not yet finalized the squad for the World T20 Championship that will be played in Sri Lanka, in the month of September.
Pakistan named Mohammad Hafeez as the new captain for the shortest version of the game, who replaced Misbah-ul-haq.
Talking about the issue, Afridi told a Pakistan channel that it was the right time for the selectors to finalize the squad else it might affect the team's preparations for the mega event.
"It will allow the players to mentally prepare themselves for the challenge and plan ahead. I think any more delay will affect our preparations," he added.
Afridi also felt Hafeez would improve nad learn the art of leading the side with time.
"Every new captain goes through a learning process. Hafeez also has to go through it and learn. I also was able to give my best as captain after going through a phase. Every captain becomes successful after learning with time," he explained.
The all-rounder also insisted that he had no issues with the captain, whether it is Misbah-ul-haq or Mohammad Hafeez as he has a good rapport with both the players.
"They are very supportive. They don't hesitate to discuss things and I have no issues with them at all," he said.
Pakistan currently playing Sri Lanka in the five-match ODI series, have already lost two matches, winning one and seek to save series as they play their final ODI match against the hosts on Monday at Colombo.
