New Delhi, Jun 26: India's Virender Sehwag is all set to return to ODIs after a long break for the five match series against Sri Lanka next month after he was rested on fitness grounds for the Asia Cup following his poor form in the ODI series featuring Australia and Sri Lanka early this year.
Sehwag who had a commendable run in the fifth edition of Indian Premier League, has made himself available for selection for the five match ODI series against Sri Lanka and one-off Twenty20.
Selectors are likely to pick the squad in the first week of July and will also select a side keeping in mind the Twenty20 World Cup that is due in Sri Lanka in the month of September.
"He wasn't fully fit for the Asia Cup. During the Australian tri-series, he was regularly treated for his shoulder injury and so the selector thought it fit to rest him. But in the IPL, he was simply brilliant," a source told TOI.
Sehwag, who led Delhi Daredevils in IPL 5, had scored 495 runs with five consecutive fifties from 16 matches.
Sehwag's form was a nightmare to the team and for the cricketer himself, as the continued bad form resulted in his axeing from the team for Asia Cup that was held in Bangladesh in the month of March 2012.
Having scored a mere 35 runs from four games, moreover was involved in a verbal spat with skipper MS Dhoni which led to speculations of a rift in the team could have played a role in his axeing.
When asked repeatedly about Sehwag being rested, chief selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth had said, "Asking the same question in different ways will not get you a different answer. It is the honest truth. I am not giving any other reason. The players have been rested on injury grounds. That is a promise. I cannot show you the medical reports because it is an internal matter," Srikkanth said after announcing the squad for Asia Cup.
There were speculations about his fitness as he was completely fit for the cash-rich Indian Premier League.
Now, with Sehwag making himself available for the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka in July, looks like the dashing opener is all set to make a comeback and torment the bowlers and tear apart any attack after a splendid show in IPL 5.
