Sehwag, Zaheer to be picked for SL tour

Mumbai, Jul 3: After missing Asia Cup, India's Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan are keen on returning to ODI fold as selectors pick the squad for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka on Wednesday.

Zaheer Khan and Virender Sehwag, rested for the Asia Cup held at Bangladesh in the month of March on fitness grounds, are eyeing Sri Lanka tour to stage a comeback.

The duo also missed the one-off T20 match against South Africa on March 30. Since then the duo have not played an ODI and it would be interesting to see how they perform after a break.

Virender Sehwag, played a vital role in his IPL team Delhi Daredevils' journey in the fifth edition of cash-rich Indian Premier League as they reached the semi-final of the tournament.

Sehwag, who led Delhi Daredevils in IPL 5, was fabulous as he scored 495 runs with five consecutive fifties from 16 matches.

Since Sehwag is expected to return to the ODI side, it looks like a middle-order batsman would have to make way for the opener, likely Manoj Tiwary.

While India's Ajinkya Rahane is likely to fill the third opener's slot in the absence of Sachin Tendulkar, who has not confirmed his availability for the ODI tour of Sri Lanka.

Selectors might take a call on Harbhajan Singh tomorrow as there is a dilemma over the experienced spinner's future but at the same time the regulars R Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha have done a great job for the team so far while Harbhajan will battle it out with Rahul Sharma for the third spinner's slot.

While Vinay Kumar, Praveen Kumar, Ashok Dinda, Irfan Pathan with Zaheer Khan and Umesh Yadav battle it out for the four slots, two of the four pacers will have to make way for Zaheer and Yadav, as the duo are likely to be a part of the side.

Similarly the all-rounder slot is likely to go to Ravindra Jadeja, though he has not been very impressive as another contendor Yusuf Pathan has failed to impress the selectors throughout the season.

Interestingly, a few players from India A might get picked for the upcoming tour following their impressive performance in the Carribean.

Middle-order batsman Jalaj Saxena from Madhya Pradesh and pacer Bhuvaneshwar Kumar form Uttar Pradesh could be the surprise selections while selectors meet on Wednesday to pick the team for the upcoming tour of Lanka to play a five match ODI series followed by a one-off Twenty20.
