Gayle, Afridi named icon players in SLPL

Colombo, Jul 4: After having icon players concept in Indian Premier League, its Sri Lanka Premier League's turn to name two international players Chris Gayle and Shahid Afridi as icon players for the upcoming league that is scheduled to begin from August 10.

Apart from Gayle and Afridi, five Sri Lankan players have been chosen as icon players for their respective teams to ensure that it boosts their viewership.

The Jamaican who is on national duty will be playing a five-match ODI series against New Zealand followed by a two match Test series at home which will get over on August 6, 2012.

Both the cricketers, Chris Gayle and Shahid Afridi being the biggest entertainers of the game, have been drawing a lot of attention as they play for Uva province and Nagenahira respectively.

Last week Indian companies after bidding successfully for the seven Sri Lanka Premier League teams for an average price of $4.3 million, despite BCCI's reluctance to allow Indian players to participate in the league.

A player draft with a lottery will determine the order in which the players will be picked, as Sri Lanka players and international players will be drafted in two different groups. The draft will be made in such a way that all the players are equally distributed among the seven teams. The draft is expected to be ready by July 6, 2012.

Meanwhile Sri Lanka Cricket will also determine the value of the contract for each and every player in advance as it helps the franchises to know the cost of each player.

Spread over three weeks, the final of SLPL will be held on August 31. With 24 matches to be played at Colombo and Pallekele. Teams are allowed to have a maximum of 18 players including 6 foreign players, while they can play only four a game, while another restriction being the teams must play a Sri Lankan U-21 international player in the playing XI.
