Birmingham, Jul 5: Rain ensured that Australia will stay world's number one One Day International side for now.
England had to win 5-0 against Australia in the ongoing five-match ODI series to replace their old foes at the top of the ICC ODI rankings. However, they efforts were dampened by rain in the third ODI at Edgbaston on Wednesday.
Rain washed out the game and prevented England from trying to march towards the number one ranking.
Umpires Aleem Dar and Rob Bailey had hoped for a 28 overs per side game after ground inspection at 5.05pm (local time). However, further heavy rain meant it was not possible. At 6.11pm, the match was abandoned.
England already have a 2-0 lead after winning the opening games at Lord's and The Oval respectively.
The hosts were aiming to becoming the first side to be on top of world rankings in all three formats of the game. They are currently No. 1 in Tests and Twenty20 Internationals.
The fourth ODI will take place at Chester-le-Street on Saturday.
