Bangalore, Jul 19: Sachin Tendulkar's absence from the Indian team will reunite Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir at the top of the order when India-Sri Lanka One Day International series begins in Hambantota on July 21, Saturday.

One of the most successful opening combinations for India, Sehwag-Gambhir will be looking forward to resume their partnership with loads of runs in Sri Lanka.

Sehwag and Gambhir set to reunite

Tendulkar had opted out of the five-match ODI series as he wanted to spend time with his family. Whenever Tendulkar was in the playing XI, it was the Master Blaster and Sehwag who walked out to bat to face the new ball.

Gambhir had to be dropped down to number three slot. The pair of Tendulkar and Sehwag too is one of the best. However, in recent times, the Delhi boys have formed a fine association in Test and the shorter formats.

The right and left combination always poses a problem for opposition bowlers as they have to alter their line and length constantly.

The 33-year-old Sehwag missed India's previous international tournament, Asia Cup in Bangladesh. Then, Gambhir came back to his usual position with Tendulkar.

This series, it will be Tendulkar who will be missing and Sehwag will join forces with Gambhir. The last time they came out to bat together was on February 12, 2012 at the Adelaide Oval against Australia.

During that tri-series in Australia, India decided to rotate Tendulkar, Sehwag and Gambhir. So for some matches during that tournament, India always had new opening pairs.

For more than a month recently, Sehwag and Gambhir were on the opposite sides in the Indian Premier League. Both were captains, Sehwag with Delhi Daredevils and Gambhir guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to the title in IPL 5.

Known as "Jai-Veeru" the Delhi pair is sure to pile up runs for India in Sri Lanka.
