Bangalore, Jul 20: Yuvraj Singh has revealed how he was "very very disappointed" at missing out on the India Under-19 World Cup squad in 1998 to South Africa and he made up for that by winning the Man-of-the-series award and the trophy for India in the next edition two years later in Sri Lanka.
Yuvraj was a part of the victorious Indian Under-19 World Cup team in Sri Lanka in 2000. The team was led by Mohammad Kaif and also had Reetinder Sodhi in the team. All three went on to represent India at the senior level.
In 1998, when the tournament was held in South Africa, Virender Sehwag was part of the Indian under-19 team.
Yuvraj, who is training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) here in Bangalore, went down memory lane and spoke about his experiences as an under-19 cricketer.
"I was very very disappointed when I didn't get selected for the tournament held in South Africa, but I made it to the next (event in Sri Lanka)," revealed Yuvraj.
The 30-year-old said it was an "incredible feeling" playing in Under-19 World Cup.
"It was an incredible feeling. I didn't do well in the beginning but Roger Sir (Binny, coach) told me that I will do well and win the Man of the series and it happened that way. I batted well, bowled decently and my fielding was exceptional. You see at that age, you have many insecurities and you need someone to give you that confidence and the same is the case with these players (current bunch). If they can handle all that then they can do well," he said.
He felt under-19 World Cup is a "great platform" for the players to show their potential.
"It's a great platform to show to the world what you are capable of. There will be television coverage and crowds, and if you do well here, you get noticed. At the under-19 level one of the issues is suddenly you have to cope with bigger grounds. It happened to me too. Plus now these events are televised and that too can add to the pressure. And whatever be the age-group, you are playing for India and that is a huge pressure. The players have to adjust to that and also avoid the distractions," Yuvraj said.
The current India Under-19 World Cup squad, led by Unmukt Chand is currently preparing at the NCA for next month's World Cup in Australia. Yuvraj passed on few tips to the players. The team will be at NCA till August 2.
This year's ICC Under-19 World Cup will begin in Australia on August 11 and goes on till August 26.
