Bangalore, Jul 26: India Test batsman VVS Laxman will start his preparations for the forthcoming season as he will play for Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) in a local tournament organised by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) from July 27.
The KSCA-hosted Safi Darashah Trophy tournament will see four-day matches and Hyderabad team will be based in Mysore and play all three games there. Hyderabad will face Baroda Cricket Association from Friday, July 27. However, Laxman will be missing the first game and is likely to join the squad for the next match against Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) on August 1.
The eight-team tournament will host the final in Bangalore. Hyderabad are grouped in Zone B with KSCA President's XI, Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) and Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA). The tournament also has Bangladesh 'A's participation.
Laxman, who was not part of the Indian Premier League, was last seen in a match situation in an Indian jersey in January, 2012.
The 37-year-old played his last Test match for India against Australia at the Adelaide Oval from January 24 to 28. India had a disastrous tour of Australia where they were handed a 0-4 drubbing by the hosts in the four-match Test series.
Laxman, like other Indian batsmen, failed to make an impact during that tour of Down Under. He will be hoping to return to form at the earliest when New Zealand travel to India for a two-Test series.
A few days back, Laxman was seen training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) here at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium premises.
The 134-Test veteran will get an opportunity to play on his home ground after a long time. India-New Zealand first Test will begin at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on August 23.
The Safi Darashah tournament is the perfect platform for Laxman to hit match mode. It is important for him to get back to good batting form as India will depend on him in the new season after the exit of Rahul Dravid.
