'Srikkanth liberated me as a batsman'

Toronto, Aug 9: Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar has rated Krishnamachari Srikkanth as one of the best opening partners he had, also saying that the Chairman of the Selection Committee, had 'liberated' him as a batsman.

Reminiscing the glorious days of Indian cricket, Gavaskar said Srikkanth had a positive influence on him as the right-handed batsman had encouraged Gavaskar to play the shots.

"As my opening partner, Srikkanth somehow liberated me as a batsman. He used to encourage me to play the shots that I wouldn't otherwise offer. He had a positive influence on me," said Gavaskar.

Talking about the cash-rich Indian Premier League, at an event in Toronto to promote cricket, Gavaskar said such events definitely promote the game.

"Previously players could not think of cricket for livelihood, unless they had played at the national level but now they can," he said.

Gavaskar who was in Canada to promote the game among Indo-Canadians said he wants to spend a couple of days every year in Canada.

"I am willing to spend a couple of days every year in Canada to give the young cricketers profession training so that they can compete globally," he said.

Sunil Gavaskar, who was named the ambassador of Money Gram, the money transfer giant for the country as part of its mutlti-year agreement with the International Cricket Council during an event at Toronto recently.
