Despite poor form, Mukund is captain

Bangalore, Aug 11: Despite poor form on the tour of West Indies, left-handed opener Abhinav Mukund has been named as captain of India 'A' team which will tour New Zealand in September and October.

The opener from Tamil Nadu had a horrendous tour against West Indies 'A' averaging a dismal 7.66. But he is still in the team and has bee made the skipper. He had scores of 0, 0, 8, 8, 10 and 20 in West Indies. A total of 46 runs. And for this, he has been elevate to captaincy. One cannot understand the selectors logic here.

The senior selection committee, which met on Friday in Mumbai to announced India Test and Twenty20 Intenational squads, also named a 16-man India 'A' squad.

India Under-19 World Cup captain Unmukt Chand has been rewarded for his consistent run with the bat. He finds a place.

Paceman Vinay Kumar is also in the squad. On the tour of Caribbean, Cheteshwar Pujara was the captain. He is now part of the Test team.

Robin Bisht, Shikhar Dhawan, Parvinder Awana and wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha have been dropped. Bisht got only one chance to bat against the West Indies 'A' and Awana had only one game.

Ambati Rayudu has been included. He had a good IPL 5 with the Mumbai Indians. Kings XI Punjab's Mandeep Singh is also called up.

India A squad: Abhinav Mukund (captain), Naman Ojha (wicketkeeper), Mandeep Singh, Anustup Majumdar, Unmukt Chand, Ashok Menaria, Ambati Rayudu, Suryakumar Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Akshay Darekar, Vinay Kumar, Shami Ahmed, Jalaj Saxena, Rahul Sharma, Rituraj Singh and Jaydev Unadkat.
