Bangalore, Aug 18: VVS Laxman, one of India's most stylish batsmen, is set to quit international cricket in a few hours from now, on Saturday, in Hyderabad.
The 37-year-old will play in the upcoming India-New Zealand Test series starting at his home ground in Hyderabad on August 23. The second and final Test is in Bangalore from August 31. This series is set be his last international appearance.
Laxman, who made his Test debut against South Africa in Ahmedabad in 1996, has so far played in 134 Tests with 17 hundreds.
Here, we look at 10 best Test knocks of Laxman during his illustrious 16-year-old journey with the Indian team. Till date he has played 134 Tests and scored 8,781 runs.
Every Indian cricket fan will remember this innings of Laxman. It was one of the greatest turnarounds in Test history. When India followed on against the mighty Aussies, Laxman and Rahul Dravid (180) turned the match to halt Steve Waugh and his men's unbeaten Test run of 16. This knock of 281 was at the time the highest by an Indian.
Two years later after that epic 281, Laxman yet again tormented the Aussies in Adelaide. This time too, he had Dravid for company as India registered a historic Test win in Australia.
A Man-of-the-match performance from Laxman in the second innings gave India one of those rare wins in South Africa. The architect of this victory was Laxman with that match-winning knock in second innings. The next best Indian score was 32 from Virender Sehwag. In the context of the match, Laxman's innings made a huge difference.
On a disastrous tour of Australia in 1999-2000, Laxman, as an opener, shone in the final Test with a fine 167. Though India lost the Test and the series with a humiliating 0-3 scoreline, Laxman proved his class.
Laxman notched up his second double hundred in this Test at the Feroz Shah Kotla after that famous 281 seven years ago against the same opposition. The match ended in a draw but Laxman's appetite for big runs against Australia continued.
Chasing 216 for a win, India were staring at defeat at 124/8. But Australia again ran into their nemesis, Laxman. The Hyderabadi, in the company of Ishant Sharma (31) eked out a one-wicket win.
Yet another second innings gem from Laxman as India chased down 257. India came from behind in the series to level 1-1. This success was due to Laxman's excellent batting in the fourth innings of the match.
This was Laxman's last hundred before the India-New Zealand series this month. A fine 176 not out in the first innings set up India's triumph at Eden Gardens.
Laxman's ton was part of a mammoth Indian total of 643/6 declared. There were tons from Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and MS Dhoni as India crushed South Africa by an innings and 57 runs.
As Sachin Tendulkar scored 241, Laxman contributed 178 and India amassed 705/7 declared in Steve Waugh's final Test. The match ended in a draw but Laxman and India denied Waugh a winning farewell.
