"The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named S. Badrinath as VVS Laxman's replacement in the Indian team for the Test series against New Zealand, which commences at Hyderabad on 23 August 2012. Badrinath will join the squad at the earliest," a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) media release said on Sunday.
The right-handed Badrinath has played two Tests for India. He made his Test debut against South Africa in Nagpur in February 2010 and same month he played his second game against the same opposition in Kolkata.
However, the 31-year-old's last match for India was a One Day International against West Indies on June 13 last year.
Laxman, who was picked for the two-Test series against New Zealand, called it quits from international cricket on Saturday.
The first Test starts on August 23 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. The second Test is in Bangalore from September 31.
