Bangalore, Aug 26: Back in 1999, during the World Cup, South African Herschelle Gibbs dropped Australia captain Steve Waugh and the latter made that famous comment "You've just dropped the World Cup." The same words might have been said by India Under-19 captain Unmukt Chand to his Australian counterpart William Bosisto on Sunday.
Bosisto dropped Chand when he was offered a simple catch. But the hosts' skipper could not hold onto that catch. He probably dropped the World Cup as India, helped by Chand's superb 111 not out took the Under-19 World Cup 2012 trophy in Townsville on Sunday.
India, while chasing 226, were in all sorts of trouble at 97/4. At that stage, Chand was joined by wicketkeeper-batsman Smit Patel. They had an unbroken partnership of 130 to guide India to a six-wicket victory and lift the trophy.
The match could have been more interesting or it could have also gone in Australia's favour if Bosisto, who went on to claim the Man-of-the-series honour later, had taken that catch off Alex Gregory.
It was in the 44th over and match was heading towards an exciting climax. Chand, on 84, chipped the ball straight to midwicket where Bosisto could not hold onto that easy catch.
At that stage, India were still needing 49 runs off 42 balls. A new batsman at the crease and that too the lower order could have brightened Australia's chances. It was not to be and Chand completed the chase in the company of Patel.
Bosisto and his boys were left thinking what if that catch was taken. It could be the most painful drop of his career.
