Bangalore, Aug 28: India captain MS Dhoni's love for bikes is a well known fact. And his passion for speed has gone to the next level as Dhoni has launched his own racing team and has already started competing in the FIM Supersport World Championship.
Dhoni's team is named as MSD R-N Racing Team India and it has two riders, Florian Marino and Dan Linfoot, the official website of FIM World Championship said.
The 2011 World Cup winning captain is the first cricketer to own a bike racing team.
Marino is a Frenchman and Linfoot is from Great Britain. Dhoni's team first took part in a race in Brno, Czech Republic, from July 21 to 22. Marino finished 13th.
MSD R-N Racing Team India uses Kawasaki ZX-6R bike in the championship.
Team Principal Amit Sandill, speaking to the official website, said: "We are looking at it from the long term perspective. (We are) trying to grow the sport in Asia. The sport itself is in a pretty nascent stage in Asia so this is a first step. Trying to get to the championship and making a kind of mark in the championship and then take the sport to India and then other countries in Asia. We would also like to start a Racing Academy. Behind all this is the passion, which comes as a bonus."
Linfoot has won two Superstock 600 races in 2008. Marino is a four-time Superstock 600 race winner, and was a full time Honda WSS rider last year. The squad has its base at Yeovil in the UK and technical director will be Andrew Stone, who currently looks after Fabien Foret's bike, a report on the official website said.
In the recent race in Moscow (August 26), Marino finished 14th among 34 riders while Infoot was 16th.
Supersport championship has 4 stroke bikes with 2, 3 or 4 cylinders. According to the rules, the race will be of minimum 85 km and maximum 110 km.
The next race is in Germany on September 9.
