DC can't move to Modi's vibrant Gujarat

Bangalore, Sep 7: Videocon Industries has shown interest in buying Deccan Chargers and if successful, want to move the franchise to Ahmedabad from Hyderabad. But, as of now, it won't be possible.

When Lalit Modi, the main architect of Indian Premier League (IPL) was the chairman of the tournament, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had reportedly shown interests in having a franchise based in Ahmedabad.

Modi's wish of seeing a home IPL team might have to wait for bit more time now. According to the tender notice issued by Deccan Chronicle Holdings Limited (DCHL), the present owners of Chargers, the team will have to be bought on "as is where is" basis. That means name of the team and its home remains unchanged even with new owners.

"Under this Invitation to Tender issued by Deccan Chronicle Holdings Limited, the winning bidder will acquire from Deccan Chronicle Holdings Limited on an "as is where is" basis the right to own and operate the IPL team currently known as Deccan Chargers which is and will continue to be based in Hyderabad," the DCHL tender notice in a newspaper advertisement said while inviting prospective buyers.

Even if a new buyer wants to pick another city, then the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has to approve it.

"We are definitely interested in buying the team from DCHL. If we manage to, we would like to shift it to Ahemdabad," Videocon Industries Chairman and Managing Director Venugopal Dhoot told "Business Standard" newspaper on Friday.

In the same paper Dhoot said Rs 700 crore seems "reasonable" to him.

Videocon Industries had previously tried to buy an IPL team but were outbid by Sahara for Pune Warriors India franchise.

Their latest attempt's result will be known on September 13 when the winning bid for Chargers will be announced.

If Videocon Industries manage to be on the winning side on that day, they will definitely push their case with BCCI for moving the team to Ahmedabad.

Gujarat CM Modi might be more than happy to extend a warm welcome to Videocon Industries to operate their IPL franchise from Ahmedabad.

Videocon, if successful might get their way with BCCI and we could have a franchise in Ahmedabad. Let us wait and watch.
