Pallekele, Sep 23: An all-round performance saw Pakistan beat New Zealand by 13 runs, to start on a winning note, as they restricted Kiwis to 164/9 in the group D clash at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
Chasing 178 to win, New Zealand started off quite well as Rob Nicol (33) and Brendon McCullum (32) gave them a good start, but after their dismissal, New Zealand lost track as they lost too many wickets which put them under pressure.
Vettori (18), Oram (11), Kane Williamson (15) all got starts but couldn't convert them to big ones, as New Zealand lacked one good partnership, which cost them the match.
Taylor's quick-fire 26 off 11 balls included 1 six and three boundaries. Though his heroics at the end of the innings, helped Kiwis go past 150 but not good enough to win the match as they finished with164/9
With a win off the first match, Pakistan face Bangladesh in their final Group D clash next week, as New Zealand and Pakistan are likely to qualify for the Super Eights.
Pakistan's Innings Report: Pakistan played brilliantly to post 177/6 in 20 overs after having won the toss and elected to bat against New Zealand in the Group D clash at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
With Mohammad Hafeez being dropped by New Zealand captain Ross Taylor in the first over, while he was on zero, went on to score 43 off 28 balls which included 2 boundaries and 2 sixes.
Nasir Jamshed along with Hafeez added 76 runs, for the second wicket to bring the team's fatest hundred in T20 internationals, also recorded his fastest fifty.
Imran Nazir (25), Umar Akmal (23), all played very well as Pakistan posted a challenging 177/6 in their 20 overs.
New Zealand, who thrashed Bangladesh on Friday, looked strong at the start of the match, but the dropped catch off the third ball of the innings, brought them down,as they hardly lifted their morale which saw two dropped catches that costed them dear, as Pakistan posted 177/6.
