Patil must talk to seniors: Manjrekar

Mumbai, Oct 3: Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar feels the new chairman of the Selection Committee Sandeep Patil must talk to senior players like Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan to sort out a few issues faced by the team.

Manjrekar, who made his debut for Mumbai under Patil's captaincy, felt the selectors need to talk to the seniors in the team to sort out the problems faced by the team and to also take a call on the fitness of these players, as he wrote in Espn Cricinfo.

"I think Patil has to talk to senior players like Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan, find out what their long-term plans are, and decide whether they will serve Indian cricket better if relieved of having to play any one format of the game," Manjrekar wrote in ESPN Cricinfo.

Moreover, there have been a couple of instances which convey the same message as the selectors did not dare to talk to the master blaster when he failed miserably for over a year, as he chose to play the tournaments and there were a few reports on Sachin blocking the way of youngsters.

There were a couple of issues related to seniors' fitness as well. Since selectors were not willing to talk to the seniors, many issues couldn't be sorted out.

Manjrekar, who has been observing the team and the selection committee over the past few years felt it was the same during the retirements of Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman.

"During the retirements of VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid, it was evident there wasn't great communication between the selectors and the players. I'd like to see that improve," he wrote.

"Once you are a selector it should not matter how much cricket you have played. You should have the confidence to sit the legends down, understand what they want, see if their plans coincide with those of Indian cricket, and act accordingly when picking teams," wrote Manjrekar

Talking about Sandip Patil, Manjrekar said, he is an excellent motivator for youngsters.

"I have always felt, while playing with him or watching him (Patil) operate as a retired cricketer, that he is cut out to be a junior team's coach. He's an excellent motivator for players aged around 17 or 18," said Manjrekar.
