Shane Watson, named the player of the ICC World T20 for scoring 249 runs and claiming 11 wickets in the mega event, though his team failed to reach the finals, after their loss to West Indies in the second semi-final, said he rates Gayle as the best T20 player in the world.
"In the end it's nice if people do say that (I'm the best). But for me, Chris Gayle is one of the most amazing players you'll ever see," said Watson, after Sydney Sixers' practice match against Delhi Daredevils last night.
Amazed by the kind of strokeplay, Watson said it was very difficult to bowl to the Jamaican.
"The things he's done in Twenty20 cricket and all competitions is pretty amazing, and you can't go past him. He's definitely the best player in the world and very difficult to bowl to.
Moreover, he also said that all the bowlers will be happy that Chris Gayle is not around as Royal Challengers Bangalore failed to qualify for the Champions League this year.
It's really good he's not around here, and I think everyone here in world cricket is glad he's not around to take them down."
Having observed Gayle since his teenage days, Watson said the Jamaican was a part of his cricket academy too.
"I've played a lot of cricket now against Chris now, and even my days at the academy, when I was 19, Chris was also there with a few of the other West Indian guys," Watson said.
When asked if there is a rivalry between the two T20 specialists, Watson said it was a healthy rivalry, as he is one of the best players in all forms of the game.
"I think it's a healthy rivalry. You want to play against the best players in the world, and Chris Gayle is certainly that in all forms. It's always very enjoyable to get his wicket because you know how much impact he can have on a game."
Watson praised the Jamaican and revealed that he also admires Chris Gayle as he has been a wonderful entertainer.
Infact everyone would agree as everyone would agree that Gayle is definitely the most amazing T20 player in the world.
