Chennai edge Mumbai by six runs

Johannesburg, Oct 21: It was a match of no significance. But that did not stop both teams giving their best and we witnessed a thrilling finish in which Chennai Super Kings clinched a six-run win over defending champions Mumbai Indians in the Champions League Twenty20 here on Saturday night. This was Chennai's first win in three attempts.

Scorecard; Points Table

The win by Highveld Lions over Yorkshire earlier in the day had made this Group B match inconsequential. Lions and Sydney Sixers had progressed to semi-finals and both IPL teams were knocked out.

Chasing 174, Mumbai Indians were off to a slow start and were always far behind the scoring rate. But Dinesh Karthik decided to change the course of the match and his 45-ball 74 almost took Mumbai home before his departure in the 19th over, swung the balance in Chennai's favour.

Though Kieron Pollard was on strike to Ravindra Jadeja for the final over where 19 were required, he fell on the second ball after hitting a six in the first. Jadeja and Chennai held their nerve to eke out a six-run consolation win.

Earlier, openers Faf du Plessis and Murali Vijay set a strong platform but Chennai lost momentum in the middle and ended with 173/8 in 20 overs.

Lasith Malinga took five wickets for 32 runs in four overs.

In their final league games on Monday, Chennai will face Yorkshire while Mumbai take on Sydney Sixers. It is a day of dead matches with teams playing for pride.
