Adelaide, Nov 26: Faf du Plessis (110 not out off 376 balls) played one of the most obdurate knocks in Test history to give South Africa a draw against Australia in a dramatic finish at the Adelaide Oval on Monday.
Australia came within two wickets of taking the game but Du Plessis defied the bowling attack with a gritty century on debut. Till the last over, bowled by Peter Siddle, the hosts kept trying but South Africa ended on 248/8 in 148 overs, chasing 430.
Left-hander Morne Morkel played out the final six balls to secure the draw with Du Plessis.
The right-handed Du Plessis, who came to the crease at 4/45 in 21 overs, batted for 464 minutes.
South Africa had started the final day on 77/4. Nathan Lyon bowled 50 overs with 31 maidens. He finished with figures of 3/49. Siddle had 4/65 in 33 overs.
The third and final Test starts on November 30 in Perth.
