Ricky Ponting's record against India

Bangalore, Nov 29: Undoubtedly, the most successful captain of Australia and one of the legends the country has ever witnessed, Ricky Ponting has been a consistent performer during his Test career that spanned 17 years.

Here's a look at how he fared against India since his debut against Sri Lanka at Perth, who has been highly successful against India since 1996.

Vs India (1996-2012)

Ricky Ponting has recorded 8 centuries, 11 fifties against India, at an average of 54.36 off 29 matches, and has collected 2,555 runs with a highest score of 257 against India, the most by any batsman against India in the longer version of the game.

His 8 centuries is on par with Vivian Richards and Gary Sobers (West Indies) as they have also registered 8 tons against India. The most tons hit by any batsman against India.

The former Australian captain surpassed West Indies great Clive Lloyd's record of 2,344 runs in 28 Tests to become the highest run-scorer against India in Jan 2012.

In India (1998-2001)

Ponting has played 14 Tests in India, and has collected 662 runs at an average of 26.48 with a highest score of 123 which includes only one century in India, while he has led Australia to two victories in India.

257 (in the second innings) at Melbourne in Dec 2003

242 (3rd Innings) at Adelaide, Dec 2003

221 (4th Innings) at Adelaide, Jan 2012

His other double centuries came against Pakistan (209 in Jan 2010 and 207 in Jan 2005) and West Indies (206 in April 2003)

One of the most successful cricketers of his era, Ricky Ponting's decision has left the cricketing world to be content with his achievements as one cannot catch him in action after the Perth Test against South Africa that starts on Friday.
