New Delhi, Dec 18: Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar on Monday said that Virat Kohli was ready for Test captaincy especially after MS Dhoni led Team India to its third consecutive series loss in the last one year.
MS Dhoni's team paved way for England's historic win after 28 years which also marked the team's second Test series loss to England in July-Aug 2011.
Since Dhoni is leading Team India in all the three formats, former cricketers feel its time to have a different captain for the Test team.
Based on the performance in the last two years and Virat Kohli's ability to lead the side former cricketers Sunil Gvaskar and Atul Wassan urged Kohli to be made the Test captain.
"Till the fourth day of the Nagpur Test, I would have backed Dhoni. Now that Virat has come up with a hundred under trying circumstances where he curbed his natural game, he discovered a good part about himself. He is ready to take on the mantle of Test cricket. That needs to be looked at in a positive manner by everyone concerned as that is where the future lies," Gavaskar told NDTV.
Atul Wassan also echoed a similar opinion and urged the selectors to think about the future.
"I have got this view point that one captain cannot be used for all formats. Certainly there is no alternative as of now and Virat is our future choice. But God forbid if the team keeps on losing and we have to sack him, who do we fall back on. The succession plan has to be in a phased format and has to be earmarked. Just like in Australia, we knew that Michael Clarke will be the next captain four years ago. Virat should be eased by the selectors in shorter formats since India is in a transition phase as of now," said Atul Wassan.
