Earlier former Indian cricketers Sunil Gavaskar, Atul Wassan, Krishnamachari Srikkanth had urged the selectors to sack Dhoni as Test captain, following his dismal show in the last two years.
Bedi has been the latest to comment on Dhoni's leadership skills, questioning his role in the team.
"Dhoni should feel lucky that he's still there. If Tiger Pataudi or Sunil Gavaskar had lost as many Tests, they wouldn't have lasted this long. He hasn't done enough to continue being the skipper. He should have been eased out after the World Cup win," Bedi told Headlines Today.
"He's is not a Test skipper. You need a skipper who's worthy of his place in the eleven. Tell me is his 99 of any use to the team," he asked.
Having played 22 Test matches in the last two years, Dhoni has led to seven wins, 10 losses and five draws, registering a winning percentage of 33.3%.
Moreover the team's record away from home suggests that Dhoni has managed only two wins off the 13 matches and witnessed 8 losses in the last couple of years.
The veteran of 67 Tests, Bishan Singh Bedi also urged selectors to name young Virat Kohli as the skipper for the longer version of the game.
"You can't say we can't bring anyone else. I would make Virat Kohli the captain. He's got a sharp cricketing brain. You got to trust the young blood. This is a young man's game. We've been carrying a lot of dead wood for a long time," Bedi said.
