Bangalore, Dec 18: A bat in hand is the normal sight a cricket fan identifies Sachin Tendulkar with. But, do you know that the Master Blaster once swapped his role as a batsman to bartender!
Yes, Tendulkar once played a bar tender and mixed drinks for his team-mates and support staff during the tour of Pakistan in 2006. This was revealed by former India coach Greg Chappell.
Writing a column in "The Hindu" newspaper on Monday (December 17), Chappell wrote about the day when Tendulkar took up this new role in Faisalabad when Indian team toured Pakistan.
Recalling that, Chappell wrote: "One of the special times that have stuck in my memory was on the 2006 tour of Pakistan. I had noticed that, due to the unique nature of their life, the Indian players did not spend much time together off the field. They retreated into their own little world away from the ground; to remedy this, I decided to organise an opportunity for them to socialise."
"In Faisalabad, we arranged a private dinner for the team and support staff at which Sachin (Tendulkar) decided to play bar tender. During the evening, he mixed drinks and delivered them to teammates and staff who were relaxing with food and music.
In those few hours, I saw Sachin unwind and play prankster. He took great delight in the outcomes. It was a touching moment because I glimpsed what the young Sachin might have been. I also sensed that this Sachin was not allowed out, very often."
In the same column, Chappell, who did not have a great relationship with India players during his tenure as coach, wrote how tough it was being Tendulkar and the Australian praised the Mumbai man.
