Sydney, Jan 3: Australia pace trio of Jackson Bird (4/41), Mitchell Starc (3/71) and Peter Siddle (2/46) shared nine wickets to bowl Sri Lanka out for 294 in 87.4 overs on the opening day of the third Test here at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Thursday.
Australia captain Michael Clarke won the toss and elected to field in what is Michael Hussey's final Test. Clarke's decision paid off as his quick bowlers rattled the visiting batsmen.
Barring Lahiru Thirimanne (91) and captain Mahela Jayawardene (72), none of the batsmen made an impact against a disciplined bowling attack.
Left-handed Thirimanne, flown in from Sri Lanka for this Test following injuries to three of their players, got acclimatised to the conditions quickly. He fell short of 9 runs for his maiden Test hundred.
Right-arm paceman Bird, playing only his second Test, returned with his career best figures of 4/41 in 19.4 overs (10 maidens).
Australia have already taken the series 2-0, having won in Hobart and Melbourne.
