New Delhi, Jan 6: Virender Sehwag has been dropped from India squad for the first three One Day Internationals against England. Cheteshwar Pujara is the opener's replacement in the squad of 15 announced by selectors on Sunday.
The selection committee has not made any drastic changes to the squad that lost the ODI series 1-2 to Pakistan. Sehwag is the only player missing from the squad which did duty against Pakistan.
The team management and selectors had given indication of not picking Sehwag for England ODIs when the veteran opener was not included in the playing XI for the third and final ODI against Pakistan at Feroz Shah Kotla on Sunday which India won by 10 runs.
The 24-year-old Pujara, who has played nine Tests, is yet to play ODIs. The right-hander was in top form against England in the recently concluded four-match Test series. He has been in good nick in the ongoing Ranji Trophy.
Rohit Sharma, who too is in horrendous form, has survived the axe. Rohit's last six ODI innings read 5, 0, 0, 4, 4 and 4. Sehwag scored just 35 runs in two games against Pakistan.
With Sehwag missing out, Ajinkya Rahane will partner Gautam Gambhir at the top. Rahane, who played in Delhi, as an opener, fell for four runs.
India will play five ODIs against England. The first match starts in Rajkot on January 11. The second and third ODIs are in Kochi (January 15) and Ranchi (January 19).
