Jamshedpur, Jan 8: The 22-year-old Shami Ahmed received a rousing reception at his home town on his arrival after his successful ODI debut against Pakistan at Feroz Shah Kotla on Sunday.
According to a report on Indian Express, residents of Sehazpur Ali Nagar, a village in Amroha district of Uttar Pradesh were thrilled to welcome their hero especially after his superb performance on debut, as he conceded only 23 runs off 10 runs and recorded 4 maidens and a wicket on Sunday.
The youngster who rocked the cricketing world with an impressive performance on debut was overwhelmed with the response he got from his people.
"It is late in the night right now but people are still dropping in to wish me luck," Shami said after reaching his hometown on Monday.
If Shami was thrilled, his father Tousif was also equally excited with the kind gesture, as the hometown gathered to greet Shami Ahmed.
"I have never seen such a big reception in my life. Close to 30,000 people were present to greet him (Shami). Fans came from Morabadad, 21 km from our village. Even now, as I speak to you, there are still about 1,000 people in my home. But I am loving it. I am overwhelmed," Shami's father Tousif told The Indian Express.
Talking about his ODI debut, Shami said "The tougher the match, the more comfortable I am. A day before the match, I had met former Pakistan pacer Waqar Younis at an event. He told me that it is very important for a pacer to keep his cool. That stayed in my mind during the game," said Shami.
Moreover, he also said that the food prepared by his mother would also be special as he has returned home victorious.
"Today's biryani will have a special taste," said mother Anjum.
