Rajkot, Jan 20: For the first time in Ranji Trophy history, Saurashtra have made it to the final. They defeated Punjab by a mammoth 229-run margin at the SCA stadium here on Sunday morning to march into the title round.
Saurashtra will now await the winner of the other semi-final between Mumbai and Services being played in New Delhi. In the history of India's premier domestic tournament since inception in 1934-35, Saurashtra had never reached the final and all the players were ecstatic after being triumphant on their home turf. However, the last time, in 1937-38, Nawanagar had reached the final, which was the team from this region. So, it has been 75 years since that final where Nawanagar finished second to Hyderabad.
On the fifth and and final day, Punjab resumed their chase of 349 and were bowled out for 119 in 40 overs. They had started the day at 45/2 and were hoping to overhaul the big target. However, offspinner Vishal Joshi produced a fine spell of bowling to trigger Punjab's batting collapse.
Joshi finished with 5/43 in 11 overs and was adjudged Man-of-the-match.
The final will he held from January 26 to 30 at a venue yet to be decided by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
