Mumbai, Feb 6: Rest of India (ROI) made Mumbai pay heavily for making a mistake on the opening day of the Irani Cup here on Wednesday at the Wankhede Stadium. Riding on Murali Vijay's century, ROI dominated the day after being sent to bat by opposition captain Abhishek Nayar. It was a perfect batting strip and ROI batsmen cashed in.
At stumps on the first day of the five-day clash, ROI were on top with in 90 overs. Vijay made 116 while his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan scored 63 and middle-order batsman Ambati Rayudu contributed 51. Suresh Raina (36) and are captain Harbhajan Singh (0) are the not out batsmen.
After two sessions of toil, Mumbai bowlers made a comeback of sorts by taking three wickets in the final session.
Vijay and Dhawan had a partnership of 144 for the first wicket. Mumbai did not have a wicket in the first session of play.

Vijay hit his 11th first-class hundred to put Rest of India (ROI) in command. At tea, ROI were going strong at 231/2 in 62 overs. Vijay is batting on 116 while Ambati Rayudu is with him at 5 not out.
Between lunch and tea, ROI lost two wickets - Dhawan (63) and Tiwary (37) but on a good batting pitch, Vijay is well set for a big score. The Tamil Nadu right-hander slammed his second successive Irani Cup hundred. He had made a record 266 against Rajasthan in Bangalore last year.

Mumbai's decision to field first backfired as Rest of India openers made a strong start to Irani Cup here on Wednesday.
Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay, after a cautious beginning, remained unseparated at lunch on the opening day. ROI are comfortably placed at 135/0 in 35 overs. Dhawan is batting on 58 (10 boundaries) while Vijay is 67 not out (11 fours).
Mumbai employed six bowlers but failed to succeed in the opening session.

Rest of India skipper Virender Sehwag pulled out of the game due to an upset stomach. Harbhajan Singh is leading the side. In Sehwag's absence, Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan opened the batting.
Nayar is leading Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai for the first time after regular captain Ajit Agarkar was ruled out of this match due to an injury.
Young batsmen Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane, who missed Ranji Trophy final against Saurashtra due to India duty, are back in Mumbai playing XI.
Harbhajan, Suresh Raina, S Sreesanth and other players will have a chance here to impress the selectors ahead of the Australia Test series.
Sachin Tendulkar is playing for Mumbai and is one century away from equalling Indian first-class record of 81, held by Sunil Gavaskar. Tendulkar is also 104 runs short of becoming the second Indian to complete 25,000 first-class runs.
