Chennai, Feb 16: Opener Gautam Gambhir, who was dropped from the Indian Test team, made a strong statement by hitting a fine hundred for India ‘A' in the three-day warm-up game against Australia here on Saturday.
Gambhir, leading India ‘A', scored a fine 112 before being dismissed by Moises Henriques, on the opening day. India 'A' finished the day in a strong position at 338/4 in 90 overs. Rohit Sharma was out for 77. Manoj Tiwary is 77 not out while CM Gautam is unbeaten on 34.
The left-hander proved his critics wrong at the Guru Nanak College ground here. He had won the toss earlier and opted to bat first.
Gambhir, despite a good series against England recently, was not picked by the selectors for the opening two Tests.
One of the best players of spin in India, Gambhir yet again proved his class as he played the visiting spinners very well. After a quiet start to the innings, Gambhir grew in confidence and completed a century.
Gambhir took 162 balls for his 112 and hit 13 boundaries and three sixes.
First India-Australia Test begins on February 22.
