Chennai, Feb 23: When he played the game, VVS Laxman kept to himself and did what best he knows - that is batting. Now post-retirement in a new avatar, the Hyderabadi is wearing an expert's hat and he doesn't like what India captain MS Dhoni is doing.
Laxman, in his first stint as a commentator for "Star Cricket" TV channel in the India-Australia Test series, feels Dhoni is not treating Harbhajan Singh well.
Commentating during the morning session of play on Saturday in the ongoing first Test, Laxman was not happy with Dhoni not handing the ball to Harbhajan, who is playing his 100th Test.
"Dhoni is sending out the wrong message by keeping Harbhajan (Singh) on the sidelines. He is making him (Harbhajan) feel unwanted in the team. A guy who is playing his 100th Test doesn't deserve that sort of treatment," Laxman said as R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja bowled in tandem.
He also said that Harbhajan Singh was a specialist spinner and he needed to bowl than Jadeja. Laxman also felt that once Harbhajan gets a few wickets, he is a different bowler.
Continuing on Harbhajan, he added: "When Harbhajan returned after a long time for the Mumbai Test against England late last year, he was given the same treatment. A guy who is making a comeback has some nervous energy, some jitters and a captain should give him plenty of support and that's how you get the best out of a player. Dhoni didn't do that then."
Harbhajan bowled much better than the first day and took one wicket in his 25 overs. He finished with bowling figures of 1/87 while Ashwin had seven scalps. Australia were bowled out for 380.
