India defeated Australia by eight wickets on the fifth and final day on Tuesday. Dhoni played one of the best innings in Test cricket with a 226. Offspinner R Ashwin took 12 wickets.
Clarke, in his post-match comments, gave full credit to the Indian team for the way they played.
"Full credit to the Indian team. They were outstanding throughout the Test. MS Dhoni was outstanding. That innings changed the game," Clarke said.
"No excuses," Clarke added when asked about his team's defeat. However, he said they would be looking forward to the next Test in Hyderabad and work harder to level the series.
On the pitch, Clarke said it was a good wicket and was tough for batting only in the second innings.
The skipper also praised debutant Moises Henriques for scoring half centuries in both innings. He was "outstanding", Clarke said.
The second Test begins on March 2. This is a four-match series.
