In a media release, Cricket Australia (CA) said that Wade's scans have confirmed a sprained right ankle. Given the uncertainty of Wade's availability, Haddin will fly from Australia to Mohali today to join the squad, CA added.
Australian Team Physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said: "Matt (Wade) has a complex ankle injury which has been confirmed by the scans and at this stage is in doubt for the Third Test starting on Thursday. A final decision on whether he will be available for the third Test will be made closer to the match."
Australia's 17-man Test squad in India had only one specialist stumper in Wade. The 35-year-old Haddin last played a Test in January 2012 against India. He has featured in 43 Tests so far and has taken 160 catches and effected four stumpings.
The third Test starts on March 14. India lead the four-match series 2-0.
