New Delhi, Mar 24: R Ashwin has broken former India captain Anil Kumble's bowling record for most wickets in a four-match Test series.
Offspinner Ashwin surpassed Kumble's tally of 27 during the third day's play of the fourth and final Test against Australia here at Feroz Shah Kotla on Sunday. India won by six wickets to complete a 4-0 whitewash.
Ashwin finished the series with 29 wickets and won the Man-of-the-series award. On Sunday, he took two wickets - Phil Hughes and Peter Siddle. In 2004-05 series against Australia in India, Kumble had taken 27 wickets. However, Australia had won that series by 2-1 margin.
Ashwin has been impressive with the ball since making his debut in 2011. He has taken over as the number one spinner in Indian Test team.
The tall spinner from Tamil Nadu took his 29 wickets at an average of 20.10. He bowled 241.2 overs in four Tests. His strike rate was 49.9. Ashwin now has 92 Test victims in 16 matches.
BS Chandrasekhar holds the record for India for most wickets in a series. He took 35 in a five-match rubber against England in 1972-73. In 2001, Harbhajan Singh had taken 32 in three Tests against Australia.
