Bangalore, Apr 3: Royal Challengers Bangalore's former captain Daniel Vettori has praised current skipper Virat Kohli saying that the youngster is "incredibly committed" to his job and that is an "outstanding quality" for a leader.
Young Kohli has taken over the reins of RCB from Vettori this season. His first assignment as a full-time captain will be against Mumbai Indians on April 4 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Previously, Kohli has led in Vettori's absence and the New Zealander is the latest in the list of players who have admired the Indian right-hander.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday night (April 2) at Chinnnaswamy Stadium, Vettori spoke on Kohli, IPL 6 season, RCB's former mentor Anil Kumble among other issues.
Here are the excerpts:
On the new IPL season
Yeah exactly, it is a new season, it is exciting to be here, we have done well in the past and we are optimistic. Most of the team is here and everyone is pretty solid.
On his role and Virat Kohli as captain
I think it still about being a senior player and given an opportunity, it is about stepping up and contributing to the team. Virat (Kohli) obviously has done well as a leader with Indian cricket and he has done a fantastic job with us when he stepped in last year and this is just a continuation of that and senior players like us, AB (de Villiers) and Chris Gayle will support.
I think he (Virat Kohli) is incredibly committed and that is an outstanding quality for a leader. It speaks from the fact that he gives it everything. It is a natural transition for him to captain RCB and he seems to be doing a great job.
On Anil Kumble's departure and its effect
Who knows, I have been here only for a day. Anil has obviously been a part of RCB and has done a great job. Everyone moves on and he is not here and we just have to see. Its early days and may be we could come back in a few weeks and then talk about that.
On Mumbai Indians
Mumbai like us has been a form team every year. They have a good combination all the way down and it is a great opening game for us and it will be a real test of where we are early on and we can access ourselves in this competition depending upon how we play against Mumbai.
On Jesse Ryder
He is improving every day and our thoughts are with him and we wish him a speedy recovery. His recovery is great news.
On his comeback from injury
I have played a few domestic games and it is good to be here and to be able to train and hopefully everything will be okay.
