Mumbai, May 4: Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gambhir have been dropped from Indian team for the Champions Trophy 2013 to be held in England next month. The selection committee announced the team on Saturday. The meeting was also attended by captain MS Dhoni.
Dinesh Karthik, Amit Mishra, Irfan Pathan and R Vinay Kumar have been recalled. Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan are the openers selected for the global 50-over tournament.
Both Yuvraj and Gambhir did not do well in the recent ODI series. Gambhir scored only 127 runs in 5 ODIs against England at home, which was India's last 50-over tournament before IPL.
Also missing from the squad from England series are Ashok Dinda, Ajinkya Rahane, Shami Ahmed and Cheteshwar Pujara.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Karthik's fine run in the IPL so far with Mumbai Indians has earned him a recall. Shikhar Dhawan too has impressed in IPL and has won a place. The case is same with R Vinay Kumar, who has been among the top 5 wicket-takers in IPL now with Royal Challengers Bangalore. Legspinner Amit Mishra took a hat-trick in IPL with Sunrisers Hyderabad and he too is in the top 5.
The Selection Committee also picked 21 probables for the tri-series in the West Indies, which will follow the ICC Champions Trophy. The fifteen members of the squad for the ICC Champions Trophy apart, the following six players were named: Manoj Tiwary, Praveen Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Ambati Rayudu, Rahul Sharma and Gautam Gambhir, a BCCI release said.
