London, June 5: South Africa's pace spearhead Dale Steyn is doubtful for the Champions Trophy opening game against India tomorrow in Cardiff.
Steyn is down with a mild left side strain, Cricket South Africa (CSA) said on its website. Steyn was injured during a warm-up match against Pakistan on Monday.
South Africa Team Manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee said: " Dale complained of some discomfort during the warm-up match against Pakistan on Monday and because of the sensitive nature of the affected area he was subsequently taken for an MRI scan which revealed mild swelling in a left intercostal muscle, in the region of the 11th and 12th rib.
"At this stage, we are unable to determine whether he will be available for the first match against India in Cardiff, however we will be assessing and treating intensively on a daily basis."
CSA also said that Quinton de Kock has joined the squad as cover for captain and wicket-keeper AB de Villiers.
India, South Africa, West Indies and Pakistan are in Group B. Champions Trophy gets under way on Thursday. Top 8 ODI teams are participating.
