'Completely devastated', says Gambhir
Bangalore, Sep 10: India opener Gautam Gambhir on Tuesday said he was "completely devastated" following a "personal tragedy".

Gambhir, who had to leave Essex county on September 1 due to family reasons, landed back in England on Tuesday.

"Hi Friends, had a personal tragedy, completely devastated. Just landed in UK to b with essex...thanks for your wishes n thoughts," Gambhir tweeted on Tuesday afternoon.

In another tweet, he added: "Sorry for being away but was in no frame of mind. You guys have been invaluable to me with your support. Plz continue that for India & essex."

Essex county had earlier issued a statement saying Gambhir had a "sudden bereavement" in the family.

Gambhir had flown back to India on September 1 following a bereavement in his family, Essex said in a statement.

"Essex County Cricket Club can announce that Gautam Gambhir will be returning to the Club following a sudden bereavement in his family.

Gautam returned home to India on 1 September but will now rejoin the Essex squad ahead of the trip to Kent on Wednesday 11 September in the LV= County Championship at Canterbury," Essex said.

So far Gambhir has played four matches for Essex scoring a century in one of them. He hit a ton in the second innings against Gloucestershire.
