IPL spot-fixing: Life ban for Sreesanth

Mumbai, Sep 13: Paceman S Sreesanth was banned for life by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday for his role in IPL spot-fixing.

Timeline of Sreesanth's controversies

"Sreesanth banned for life from playing any representative Cricket, or in any way being associated with activities of BCCI or its affiliates," BCCI said in a statement.

The BCCI disciplinary committee met on Friday to decide the fate of the paceman and it was decided to ban him for life. Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan of Rajasthan Royals were arrested in May for alleged spot-fixing in IPL 6.

Left-arm spinner Chavan was also handed life ban while another Royals' bowler Siddharth Trivedi was handed 1-year suspension. Former Royals bowler Amit Singh was also banned for five years.

Soon after TV channels reported about his ban, Sreesanth tweeted "very surprising". He was quick to delete the tweet. "Been tracking the news channels..me getting a life ban??!!Very surprising...," he had written.

Royals' young spinner Harmeet Singh was spared as there was no evidence. Still BCCI has not pronounced any verdict against Chandila.

BCCI's Statement

"The Disciplinary Committee of the BCCI, comprising Mr. N. Srinivasan, Mr. Arun Jaitley and Mr. Niranjan Shah, enquiring into the allegations of match-fixing against certain players, held a hearing on 13.9.2013, at Hotel ITC Maurya Sheraton, New Delhi.

After considering the evidence on record and hearing each of the Players in person, the Disciplinary Committee has passed the following order: -

1. Mr. Amit Singh is banned for a period of five years from playing any representative Cricket, or in any way being associated with the activities of the BCCI or its affiliates.

2. The case against Mr. Harmeet Singh has been closed in the absence of evidence against him.

3. Mr. Siddarth Trivedi is banned for a period of one year from playing any representative Cricket or in any way being associated with the activities of the BCCI or its affiliates.

4. Mr. Ankeet Chavan is banned for life from playing any representative Cricket, or in any way being associated with the activities of the BCCI or its affiliates.
