England name 17-man Ashes squad

London, Sep 23: England have recalled left-arm spinner Monty Panesar to the Test squad to tour Australia later this year for the five-match Ashes series that begins November 21 in Brisbane.

The selectors on Monday named a 17-man squad to be led by Alastair Cook. There are three uncapped players in the line-up - Yorkshire batsman Gary Ballance, Warwickshire pace bowler Boyd Rankin and Durham all-rounder Ben Stokes.

In this squad, six of them did not feature in the playing XI during the recent 3-0 Ashes series victory. Fast bowler Tim Bresnan has missed out due to injury. However, he will travel with the squad.

National selector, Geoff Miller, said: "Tim Bresnan has not been named in the squad and is continuing his recovery from a stress fracture in his back. He will travel to Australia with the squad to maximise his rehab opportunities with the medical team and coaches who will monitor his progress.

"Gary Ballance, Boyd Rankin and Ben Stokes have all come through the England Performance Programme in recent years and have put in strong performances for their counties and England teams to earn an opportunity to step into the Test environment."

England Ashes squad: Alastair Cook (captain) Matt Prior (wicketkeeper), James Anderson, Johnny Bairstow, Gary Ballance, Ian Bell, Stuart Broad, Michael Carberry, Steven Finn, Monty Panesar, Kevin Pietersen, Boyd Rankin, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Graeme Swann, Chris Tremlett, Jonathan Trott.
