Tendulkar will bid adieu to the game after his 200th Test against West Indies next month. Dravid, who has shared several memorable moments with Tendulkar, said we needed to celebrate Tendulkar's achievements over 24 years.
"It's going to be really strange for a lot of people me included. We can almost imagine a one-day team which has been playing without him for while but imagine a Test team without Sachin Tendulkar on the team list," Dravid told reporters here on Friday.
"It was virtually given that he would be around and I guess we all wished he will go on forever. But that's life. It's moment to actually celebrate that someone could achieve so much excellence and maintain that standard for 24 years," he added.
Dravid said Tendulkar had a phenomenal career. "It's only when he decided to move on that we started looking at his numbers and it sorts of boggles your mind that somebody could actually achieve what he has for over 24 years. It's been a phenomenal career."
"I know Anil started with him but I was seven junior to him in terms of playing cricket for India. When I got into the team, he was my captain in the second Test match. I sort of always looked up to him, have been inspired by his level of excellence and he was a benchmark for all of us to follow.
"I hope his family enjoys the occasion because it's going to be special couple of Test matches and hopefully he gets a chance to soak it and enjoy it. Then have a good life afterwards as well," Dravid concluded.
