A few hours after he played his 200th and final Test, Tendulkar was chosen for Bharat Ratna honour. He is the youngest and first sportsperson to be named for India's highest civilian honour.
"Sachin Tendulkar is an inspirational figure, and a role model for all sportspersons. He richly deserves the Bharat Ratna. I extend my heartiest congratulations to him," BCCI president N Srinivasan said.
The Indian cricket board's secretary Sanjay Patel hailed it as a "historic moment".
"This is a historic moment. Sachin Tendulkar has done the country proud with his sterling achievements, over the decades. Hearty congratulations to him for being conferred the Bharat Ratna," Patel said.
